Amadou Onana
Liverpool secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Anfield, putting an end to their recent losing streak and climbing into the Premier League’s top four. Goals from Mohamed Salah and Ryan Gravenberch ensured the Reds took all three points in a match that was not without its contentious moments. A significant flashpoint occurred when Onana was seen placing his hands around Mac Allister’s neck, leading referee Stuart Attwell to issue a yellow card. The decision was upheld by VAR, which reviewed the incident and agreed with the on-field call, opting against a dismissal for Onana.
Gallagher said: “The fact they were pushing and shoving each other and all right, he’s raised his arm, probably a bit higher than he wanted, but he’s pushing. Stuart’s [Attwell] got to decide, is it violent? Is it an act of brutality? He said: ‘No,’ he’s obviously relayed to the VAR what he’s seen, VAR has checked it back. The referee said, yellow card only.”
Jay Boothroyd said: “As much as I like a physical game, I look at this situation, I’m like, if someone puts their hand on my throat in the street like that, you’re gonna get an aggressive reaction from me. So in that instance, I’m saying that should be a red card, because obviously Mac Allister can’t do that, right? Mac Allister has made the most of it. He’s gone down, right? And that’s probably because if he reacts, he’ll get a red card too. But I look at that and I say that is aggressive, because again, I reiterate, if that happens off the football pitch and someone does that to you, you’re going to react in a certain way, which probably be aggressive, or you’re going to call HR!”
The incident has sparked a debate regarding the consistency of officiating in the Premier League. While Gallagher defended the decision, emphasizing the context of the players’ actions, Boothroyd argued that such behavior would warrant a more severe penalty in a non-football setting. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges referees face in maintaining fairness and consistency in the fast-paced environment of professional football.
The match’s outcome was significant for Liverpool, who needed the win to regain momentum in their campaign. However, the controversy surrounding Onana’s yellow card has diverted some attention from their on-field success. As the Premier League season progresses, the scrutiny on referees and VAR decisions will likely continue, especially with Sky Sports broadcasting a record number of live games this season.
