David Moyes
Everton manager David Moyes has shared insights into the roles of Jake O’Brien and Iliman Ndiaye as the team prepares for their upcoming Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur. With defensive concerns arising due to Jarrad Branthwaite’s injury, Moyes has expressed confidence in O’Brien’s ability to adapt, while also praising Ndiaye’s contributions to the team’s attack.
David Moyes said: “Yes, absolutely. We gave him a run at centre-back at the end of last season. He is a centre-back, but he is doing a very good job for us at right-back in the main, he needs to keep his levels up, like we all do.”
Moyes emphasized the importance of versatility in modern football, highlighting O’Brien’s adaptability as a significant asset for the team. The manager acknowledged the Republic of Ireland international’s potential to return to his natural centre-back position, particularly in light of Branthwaite’s absence. Moyes also drew parallels with midfielder James Garner, who has similarly demonstrated flexibility by playing in various positions this season.
David Moyes said: “I think versatility is a big part of football now. A lot of players are playing in different positions. I’m calling Jake a young centre-back and he’s maybe not that young now but to be a young centre-back quite often you have to make your debut and get started as a full-back – I certainly did as a player as well.”
The discussion also turned to Iliman Ndiaye, whose performances have been a bright spot for Everton. Moyes praised the Senegal international’s ability to play on both sides of the pitch and noted his effectiveness in contributing goals from wide positions. Ndiaye’s adaptability and goal-scoring prowess have provided a much-needed boost to Everton’s attacking options.
David Moyes said: “Ili has hugely impressed me with how he’s played. He’s gone from the left side to the right side. He can play either side. I think he’s been better there, we played him as a number 10 recently (the first half against Crystal Palace) and I don’t think it suited him as much as playing off the sides. He’s been so good. We’re getting goals from him as well. Ili’s goal return has been good for the role he plays.”
The upcoming match against Tottenham Hotspur presents an opportunity for Everton to capitalize on the strengths of players like O’Brien and Ndiaye. Moyes’s comments reflect a strategic approach to team selection, focusing on player versatility and maximizing individual contributions to enhance overall team performance. As Everton prepares for this crucial fixture, the manager’s insights underscore the importance of adaptability and tactical awareness in navigating the challenges of the Premier League.
