Chelsea’s head coach Enzo Maresca experienced a tumultuous match against Liverpool, being shown a red card, while Joao Pedro faced a similar fate in the victory over Benfica. Trevoh Chalobah’s encounter with Brighton and Robert Sanchez’s early dismissal against Manchester United last month further added to the team’s disciplinary challenges. Despite these setbacks, Chelsea captain Reece James remains unfazed, focusing on the positives and his personal journey back to peak performance.
Reece James said: “It’s difficult, if you look at all of them, they’re all very much different red cards. They’re not straight reds, they’re double bookings. I was next to him [Gusto] when I saw him going for the tackle, and it is a split second. He was there to win the ball, and he just mistimed it. No, I wouldn’t say this is a problem for us. We have to accept it. This is what’s happened in the past few games, but it’s not something that will continue.”
James, who celebrated his 200th senior appearance for Chelsea with a stunning volley against Nottingham Forest, continues to regain his form after enduring injury struggles over the past two and a half seasons. His goal, marking his first of the season, highlighted his progress and determination to return to his best.
Reece James said: “I’m feeling good and that’s reflecting in how I’m performing on the field. I don’t want to go into too much. Many people behind the scenes are helping me; they know who they are. I have someone at the club that I work closely with as well. He has been a big part of keeping me on the pitch. I’m on the way to getting back to where I was. It’s taken a long time, but I am feeling stronger game by game.”
James’s commitment to his recovery and form is evident, as he has featured 43 times for club and country since returning from injury in January. His focus on fitness and performance is shared with his teammates, including young talent Acheampong, who recently scored his first senior goal for the Blues.
Reece James said: “I’m delighted for him. He’s an amazing player. But when you’re so young, the best way of learning is playing on a regular basis. I’ve tried to help him as much as I can, and in the times he has played, everyone has seen what he can do and how well he can play.”
James’s leadership and positive outlook are vital as Chelsea navigates current challenges and looks to build on their recent performances. The team’s resilience and the captain’s return to form are promising signs for the Blues’ ambitions this season.
