Chelsea’s left-back Marc Cucurella recently opened up about his career trajectory as the Blues prepare for their upcoming Champions League match against Barcelona on November 25. The Spanish defender, who has been a pivotal figure for Chelsea since Enzo Maresca took over last summer, shared insights during a press conference while on international duty. Cucurella’s journey began at Barcelona, where he was signed from Espanyol’s academy in 2012 and progressed through the ranks at La Masia. Despite making his first-team debut for the Catalan giants in October 2017, Cucurella eventually moved on to loan spells with Eibar and Getafe, before joining Getafe permanently in 2020. His impressive performances there caught the attention of Brighton, and the rest is history. Now, Cucurella is recognized as one of the premier left-backs in world football, thriving in the Premier League with Chelsea.
Marc Cucurella said: “I wouldn’t change my career for having stayed at Barca, to be honest. Maybe if I had stayed, I wouldn’t have had playing time or learned what I have learned. I wouldn’t change anything I have experienced.”
Cucurella continued: “The good thing about me was that I was a little different from the rest. My characteristics weren’t the most ‘made in La Masia’, and that helped me adapt to other styles. Yamal, who is just 18-years-old, has established himself as one of, if not the, world’s best footballers in the last couple of seasons, with a sensational showing for club and country. I won’t hold back there,” Cucurella joked. “The good thing is that there’s still a long way to go before the World Cup. If I knock him out, he’ll have plenty of time to recover. I’m not one to write to opponents before games if they’re friends either.”
Cucurella’s reflections highlight the importance of adaptability and seizing opportunities, even when they lead away from prestigious clubs like Barcelona. His decision to leave the Catalan side early in his career has allowed him to gain valuable playing experience and develop a versatile style that is now benefiting Chelsea. As the Blues gear up for their Champions League encounter with Barcelona, Cucurella’s comments underscore his contentment with his career path and his readiness to face former teammates on the European stage. His playful remarks about Yamal, a rising star in world football, also demonstrate his competitive spirit and camaraderie with fellow players.
