Nemanja Vidic Rio Ferdinand
Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, has entered the ongoing debate about the comparative merits of Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo. Both players have been in the spotlight following their high-profile transfers to Arsenal and Chelsea, respectively. Ferdinand, now a football pundit, expressed his admiration for both midfielders, revealing his past desire for Manchester United to secure their signatures before they moved to rival clubs.
Rio Ferdinand said: “It’s swings and roundabouts, they have a lot of similarities about their game. I think Declan, if you let him off his leash, he’ll give you more going forward. But Caicedo, defensively, he smells danger quicker and better. I don’t think there’s much between them, so I’d be happy with either. When they were both on the market, I was screaming for Manchester United to go and buy them because I saw the value in Caicedo. I thought Caicedo would’ve been magnificent for Manchester United, given time, while Declan would’ve been a ridiculous signing. It’s splitting hairs between the two, I’ll be honest. It depends what position you’re going to play them in, if you’re playing them as a holding midfielder, I’d probably say Caicedo. As a number eight, then I’d say Declan. You let Declan go, [then] he scores more goals than Caicedo all day long and he creates all day long. They’d be a nightmare to play against together.”
Ferdinand’s comments highlight the versatility and unique strengths of both Rice and Caicedo. Declan Rice, who has joined Arsenal, is praised for his attacking capabilities when given the freedom to advance. Meanwhile, Moises Caicedo, now with Chelsea, is commended for his defensive instincts and ability to anticipate danger. Ferdinand’s analysis underscores the difficulty in choosing between the two, as both bring valuable attributes to their respective teams.
The former United star’s insights also reflect on Manchester United’s missed opportunity to acquire either player. His belief in their potential impact on the club emphasizes the high regard in which both midfielders are held. As the Premier League season progresses, the performances of Rice and Caicedo will continue to be closely watched, with Ferdinand’s observations adding to the ongoing discussion about their roles and contributions.
