AFC Bournemouth showcased their character in a thrilling comeback victory against Fulham at the Vitality Stadium. Despite trailing with just 20 minutes left on the clock, the Cherries rallied to secure a crucial win, bringing their points tally to 14 from seven games. This marks their best-ever start to a Premier League campaign and their highest standing at this stage in the top flight.
Andoni Iraola said: “Yes, obviously very pleased with the result. Very pleased with the character of the players. First half, not a lot has happened. I think we were having a little bit more on the ball but it was really difficult to create early chances. I think we’ve been playing better second half, we were keeping a little bit more the ball in terms of more patience to attack. The first half we were being too direct too early and I think we were in a good moment [when] they scored. In a close game like it was today, you don’t want to concede the first goal and you know it’s going to be difficult. But I think when they started to feel the legs a little bit, Antoine, Justin made a difference, and I think big merit to all the players for the push, for the soul. But I think first two goals, especially Antoine and Justin, they are amazing goals.”
Iraola continued: “And I think we were playing better than in the first half. Arriving, the Alex Scott chance after the corner, we had a couple of very good crosses. We were not finishing, good saves from the keeper. But they are always dangerous. They are technically a lovely team. Also a very good goal. Their first goal I think is a one, two, great finish. And it gets difficult from there. But we had to risk it. Obviously we put more offensive players and some of those offensive players have made the difference, I think.”
In the latter stages of the match, Iraola made strategic attacking substitutions that proved pivotal. Justin Kluivert, introduced in the final half-hour, netted a stunning 30-yard strike that handed Bournemouth the lead. Ben Gannon-Doak and Ryan Christie’s introductions further invigorated the side, with Gannon-Doak assisting Antoine Semenyo for his second goal.
Bournemouth’s ability to adapt and respond under pressure highlights their growing confidence and tactical flexibility. As they continue their impressive start to the season, the Cherries are setting new benchmarks for the club in the Premier League.
