Premier League players have been sent a 40-page document to outline guidelines ahead of next month’s proposed return. The protocol attempts to explain to players how they can protect themselves against the coronavirus once they return to the field of play. However, one of the guidelines has sparked uproar amongst ex-professionals. Graeme Souness has been left furious after the guidelines suggested that players must turn away from each other after tackling.
Graeme Souness: “That’s been written by someone who has never played the game and doesn’t understand the game. They’re saying you make a tackle and turn away? What if you make a tackle and end up with the ball at your feet? That’s the daftest thing I’ve heard so far about getting back to playing football. When you’re playing football at the highest level, players get themselves to a place where they’re only focused on the next five seconds in front of them and that’s how you play 90 minutes.”
