Leicester City’s big win over Sheffield United could be worth the equivalent of four points to the club in the race for a Champions League spot. Scoring five saw City’s goal difference surpass both Chelsea’s and Tottenham’s, meaning all of the clubs behind Brendan Rodgers’ men now have inferior records, further strengthening their buffer.

Ayoze Perez said: “We knew the importance of this game, we had to get a result so we could improve our home form. We are still up there and we have a better goal difference now. In your head, the main thing is to win but then when you get into a position where you score a couple of goals, and you realise you have the chance to score more, you need the hunger to keep going. It’s a great result.”

The game was Perez’s first in seven for City after a knee injury, and he admitted that he was so desperate to return that he played despite not feeling 100 per cent.

Ayoze perez added: “I’m very happy to score again and to be back with the boys. I pushed myself to be available because of the injury, I knew I wasn’t 100 per cent, but I had to be on the pitch and help my team-mates. We are in a great position and we are pushing and fighting to stay there. We played really well trying to find each other. It’s hard for defenders because I can receive it between the lines, they (Vardy and Iheanacho) are pinning the centre-backs, then as soon as any of us can turn, we are running in behind, so it’s not easy for the defenders. We have pace and we have quality. It’s about the understanding with each other. We did really well and created a lot of chances.”
