Tottenham Hotspur 1 – Chelsea 1 – Sheringham denied dream return to White Hart Lane to Glenn Hoddle
Teddy Sheringham denied Glenn Hoddle a triumphant return to White Hart Lane with his fourth and most controversial goal of that season. Sheringham infuriated Chelsea when he toppled under pressure from Steve Clarke four minutes from the end. Solihull referee Vic Callow was immediately surrounded by angry Chelsea players after awarding a free-kick.
Furious Chelsea captain Denis Wise jostled Sheringham who remained unruffled and cracked the penalty pass Dmitri Kharine. Even at the end, Chelsea defender Frank Sinclair approached Callow as the team went off and was waved away.
Chelsea’s goal came in the 23rd minute when via Tony Cascarino. The Republic of Ireland striker got hit by a Deniss Wise shot that went past Erik Thorstvedt from close range.
