Kieran Trippier praised Newcastle United’s ‘fantastic’ substitutes following the emphatic 4-0 victory over Aston Villa. A Callum Wilson brace and one apiece from Joelinton and Miguel Almirón saw Eddie Howe’s side wrap up a fifth win in six games. Trippier provided the assist for Wilson’s second goal, with the in-form striker heading home a cross from the England right back in front of national team boss Gareth Southgate. Wilson is being tipped to join his St James Park team-mate on the flight to Qatar by club legend Alan Shearer. Newcastle were made to huff and puff in the first half, but headed into the break ahead following Wilson’s 45th minute penalty. The Magpies kicked on and showed their class in the second half and remain fourth in the Premier League table.
Kieran Trippier said: “It was a good game, we know how important the game was. We’d won back-to-back games and wanted to keep winning and keep fighting to be up there in the table. The lads showed great character today, especially in the second half. Villa are a very good side and it was about getting that first goal and being patient. I think in the second half, we’re a fit team and we tried to keep the ball and to tire them. Most importantly, we had to be clinical with every opportunity that we got. The subs were fantastic. We know how important they can be and they deserve huge credit. I think we’ve shown that we can stay on the front foot all season. It was important that the gaffer had his first preseason to stamp his authority with how he wants us to play and for us to be brave with and without the ball. I think we’ve shown that all season and you can see the fitness of all the boys. That’s credit to the gaffer and all the staff.”
Howe’s side are back in action next Sunday as they travel to Southampton. They head into the game unbeaten in eight games.
