Callum Wilson admits Newcastle United ‘don’t want the season to stop’ following their flying start. The Magpies have three matches left before the Premier League takes a break for the World Cup. Wilson remains hopeful of forcing his way into Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup, although the Magpies’ number nine was not called up to the most recent squad. The 30-year-old believes unless he is involved in Qatar, he along with his team-mates would prefer to continue to play following their flying start.

Callum Wilson said: “You don’t want the season to stop, you don’t want teams to gather momentum in the off-season break and you also want to carry on your own form and momentum. If you go to the World Cup, you’re like I don’t mind it stopping because I get to experience the World Cup. But if you don’t, it’s almost like you’d rather carry on playing a Premier League campaign rather than having time off to go here, there and everywhere with training camps. You’d rather just play, play, play, which is what we’re used to. The season is a marathon, not a sprint. Yeah, we’ve sprinted and done well until this winter break coming up, and we’ve still got points to play for. But then it’s about the long-term goal and plan, and if you start badly after the break, you still have three or four months to pick it up. You don’t want to start like a house on fire and fade away. I could do without the break to be honest, you don’t want it when you’re flying. It’s going to be nice for everyone to recharge, you could take it as a positive. We play a high-tempo, high-intensity style of play, so the break can only be a positive for people to recharge, rejuvenate and go again.”
