Leeds held on for their third consecutive win in a bad-tempered Yorkshire derby containing six bookings as United slumped to their fourth away defeat of that season. The game was held up after only ten minutes when all three officials changed their green shirts to avoid a colour clash with Sheffield United’s away strip of Navy blue and Green.

Leeds went ahead with a perfectly struck drive by Gary Mcallister and were unlucky to not double their advantage after Dane Whitehouse saw a 20-yard drive hit the post before Gordon Strachan gave them the decisive lead.

Sheffield United hit back and forced an own goal from Leeds defender Gary Kelly but the second half had no more goals but did see a succession of feuds and there were two ugly moments when players on both teams traded blows.
