A Manchester City supporter endured a broken leg after an altercation erupted in one of the home sections during the Premier League fixture against Leeds United at the Etihad Stadium. The incident occurred amidst a significant presence of Leeds supporters, who traveled along the M62 to support their team. Additionally, some away fans were present in hospitality areas, taking advantage of the club’s policy allowing fans of either team as long as they maintain appropriate behavior. Following the incident, Manchester City initiated an investigation in collaboration with Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and addressed concerns on social media, emphasizing that Leeds supporters were not involved.
A statement from Man City Fan Support on X read: “We are aware of an incident that took place at the Etihad Stadium yesterday between a group of fans. From the information that has been provided to the club by the relevant authorities and through internal investigations, we can confirm that this incident did not involve Leeds fans and that the injuries were nowhere near as serious as the inaccurate rumours which have circulated online. This matter is subject to an ongoing police investigation.”
Despite the club’s statement, the incident was contested by nine fan groups, including the Official Supporters Group and City Matters, the official fan board that regularly communicates with the club on various issues. These groups highlighted a ‘brutal attack’ resulting in a fan suffering a broken tibia and urged the club to conduct a thorough investigation.
Their statement added: “We note that in January the club are scheduled to play Galatasaray at home, a club with previous history of obtaining tickets in the home end. We ask the club to urgently review the ticket for this game in particular with a view to ensuring the safety of all fans attending.”
The Manchester Evening News confirmed that a City supporter did indeed suffer a broken leg. However, no evidence has been found to implicate Leeds fans in the incident. The club and GMP continue their investigations to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the altercation.
The incident has raised concerns about fan safety and ticketing policies, particularly with upcoming fixtures against clubs with known histories of obtaining tickets in home sections. Manchester City is expected to reassess its policies to ensure the safety of all attendees in future matches.
