Nico O'Reilly
Manchester City academy graduate Nico O’Reilly has firmly established himself as the team’s first-choice left-back this season. Despite a challenging 2024/25 campaign, where City initially struggled to keep pace with Liverpool in the title race, the Blues managed to secure a third-place finish in the Premier League. This achievement came after a remarkable ten-game unbeaten run, ensuring their participation in the Champions League. Currently, City remain contenders for the Premier League title, sitting just five points behind Arsenal. A victory against Fulham could narrow this gap to two points, putting pressure on the Gunners ahead of their clash with Brentford.
Nico O’Reilly said: “We’re a very strong group. It feels a lot different to last season – we feel more as a group and more connected, and we feel better as a team on the pitch. I feel like I’m improving. It’s going inside, going on the wing, making runs into the box, defending in the back four and keeping a high line. There’s a lot of things that go into it and it’s very tactical. I’m helping and giving the team an extra body for crosses and getting passes into the box. There’s also a lot of running up and down the flank – I’m enjoying it.”
Reflecting on his journey into the senior squad, O’Reilly added: “I’m enjoying it a lot. I never thought I would be in this position so soon. I need to stay level-headed and stay calm – there’s a lot of outside noise. It’s all about what happens on the pitch which is what matters the most. It’s about taking your chance, express yourself on the pitch and show everyone who you are.”
O’Reilly’s comments highlight the transformation within Manchester City this season, emphasizing the team’s newfound cohesion and tactical discipline. His personal growth on the field is evident, as he adapts to various roles, contributing both defensively and offensively. The young left-back’s ability to integrate into the senior squad so seamlessly speaks volumes about his talent and potential. As City aims to close the gap on Arsenal, O’Reilly’s performances will be crucial in maintaining their title challenge and securing further success in European competitions.
