Nottingham Forest’s unbeaten streak came to an end as they faced a 2-0 defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion at the City Ground. Despite a spirited second-half performance, Sean Dyche’s side was unable to recover from Maxim De Cuyper’s first-half goal, with Stefanos Tzimas sealing the win for the visitors late in the game.
Sean Dyche said: “We were a long way off where we’ve been recently in the first 20 minutes. We just didn’t start right. But then we regrouped and were strong in the second half of the first half. To give away a soft goal was really disappointing after weathering a bit of a storm. Even in that bad start, we were throwing ourselves in front of things and blocking. Sometimes that has got to happen; you have got to stay in it to win it. Strangely, I was pleased until the last couple of minutes (of the first half) when we gave away a soft goal. It was only a positional thing and a tactical thing that we have worked with the players on, and also a game management thing for managing it through to the half-time whistle.”
Dyche continued: “Second half, we gave a very strong performance. It was a mistake at the end which makes it all look different. I thought there was a lot of good in the performance. There was the dominant feel of the second half and the substitutions made a big impact, so I’m really pleased with that side of things. It was just an error that cost us a second goal, and then the scoreline looks different to the actual reality of the game. The only thing we didn’t do was work the keeper enough. We were building momentum but the mistake at the end just killed it a bit. We were miles off it for the first 20 minutes and gave them the upper hand by not being anywhere near where we need to be. I was pleased with our reaction to that. There were still some very good performances. It is just that 2-0 kind of bluffs the game a bit. I don’t think it was a 2-0 game with the way our performance was.”
Despite the defeat, Dyche highlighted the positives in his team’s performance, particularly their resilience and ability to regroup after a challenging start. The Forest manager was particularly satisfied with the impact of the substitutions and the overall dominance shown in the second half. However, the lack of finishing touches and a late defensive error overshadowed their efforts, leaving the team with no points to show for their hard work.
The loss marks a setback for Nottingham Forest, who will be looking to bounce back and regain their momentum in the upcoming fixtures. The team’s ability to learn from this defeat and rectify their early-game vulnerabilities will be crucial as they aim to climb the Premier League table.
