pHIL Foden
Manchester City star Phil Foden has been showcasing his maturity and leadership qualities this season, taking on a more prominent role within the team. Despite not being part of the official captaincy group led by Bernardo Silva, Foden has embraced additional responsibilities to become a decisive force for the team. His recent performance against Leeds, where he scored a crucial 91st-minute winner to secure a 3-2 victory, exemplifies his determination to lead by example.
Phil Foden said: “I have the hunger inside me. I know I was frustrated after the Newcastle game because I missed a few chances. It was eating me up inside a little bit for the last few days, if I was honest. I just wanted to put it right today and try and make a difference. I’m really thankful that today it came off for me. I managed to score two crucial goals to help us win the game. That’s the kind of player I want to be. Deciding games and trying to be the player that people look to to try and make a difference. I’m happy.”
Phil Foden continued: “I think this is a good step in the right direction for me personally. It will give me a lot of confidence. As you can see today, when he’s fully marked out the game, other players have to step up. I’m just feeling better about my game. Obviously, I’ve made a few adjustments. I’ve been playing a little bit deeper. Not this game, but previously. I think now I’m one of the leaders as well. Maybe not as a captain, but on the pitch. I like to see myself as one of the leaders. Obviously, I’ve worked with the manager for one of the longest now so I know what he wants and the standards he sets.”
Foden’s impressive form since the Manchester derby has not gone unnoticed, earning him a recall to the England squad. The 25-year-old has adapted to a deeper role, which has resulted in fewer goals but has significantly contributed to the team’s dynamics. His ability to step up in crucial moments, as seen in the match against Leeds, underscores his potential as a key player for Manchester City.
Having overcome physical and mental burnout from the previous season, Foden appears rejuvenated, with a renewed focus and energy. His commitment to improving and making a difference on the pitch is evident, as he aims to maintain his influence regardless of the performances of other star players like Erling Haaland.
