AFC Bournemouth faced a frustrating defeat at the Stadium of Light, despite initially taking a 2-0 lead against Sunderland. The match saw Bournemouth’s defensive vulnerabilities exposed, particularly in set-piece situations, allowing Sunderland to claw back into the game and eventually secure a win.
Andoni Iraola said: “I think when you are winning 2-0 and you go back home with zero points, it’s hard. We knew that it was going to be a difficult game and especially I think lately it’s costing us a lot, the defensive set plays. We’ve conceded two set plays. We conceded the penalty and we knew it was one of their strengths. I think we played well on the ball. I think we created our chances. Sunderland doesn’t give you a lot of chances. Normally they defend very well. It’s very difficult to score against Sunderland. They are a very solid team and I think we’ve done a good job. But it’s true that, it’s not just only on the ball, it’s just without the ball, set plays, discipline. And it’s an area that is costing us a lot. Aston Villa, three goals from set pieces today, two goals from set pieces. We’re talking about seven goals in the last three games. It doesn’t matter the amount of goals you score, the amount of chances you have. If you are conceding seven goals from set pieces in three games, we got one point and normally you will get zero.”
Bournemouth’s manager, Andoni Iraola, expressed his frustration over the team’s recurring issues with set-piece defense. Despite a promising start, Bournemouth’s inability to defend against set pieces proved costly. The match against Sunderland highlighted a pattern that has troubled the team in recent fixtures, with seven goals conceded from set pieces in just three games.
Iraola acknowledged the team’s competence in possession and their ability to create opportunities against a defensively robust Sunderland side. However, he emphasized the need for improvement in defensive discipline, particularly during set plays. This recurring issue has become a significant concern for Bournemouth, affecting their ability to secure points even when they perform well in open play.
As Bournemouth continues their Premier League campaign, addressing these defensive frailties will be crucial for Iraola and his squad. The team must find solutions to tighten their set-piece defense if they are to improve their standing and capitalize on their attacking potential.
