Fabian Schar Newcastle United
Newcastle United’s Fabian Schar has identified the Carabao Cup as the club’s most promising opportunity for silverware this season. Despite mixed performances in the Premier League, the Magpies are just one game away from a two-legged semi-final in the competition, sparking excitement among fans who are already planning for the final in March. Schar, who played a crucial role in Newcastle’s triumph over Liverpool to end a 70-year trophy drought, is keen to replicate that success.
Fabian Schar said: “For us, it is the easiest and quickest way to probably win a trophy. So we want to be there again and obviously have that taste again. We were there last season, and I want to feel that again. We must do everything we can to be there again.”
Schar’s future at Newcastle remains uncertain, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. The defender’s position in the team faces competition from the likes of Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman, who have become regulars in the center-back roles.
Schar said: “That’s why the squad is so important. We have a big squad, we have a lot of quality. I think we made quite a lot of changes. I think it’s not always easy when you start a game with like eight and nine new players (in the cup). We have showed a lot of character and everyone can see the strength of the team and the quality we have, and I think that’s the part which makes me proud of this team.”
Discussing his potential contract renewal, Schar expressed his fondness for Newcastle and his openness to staying with the club.
Schar told Chronicle Live: “I have said before I feel at home here. I know in football you never know what happens and it goes quick. If that’s something that can happen, that would be good. I would be open to it of course. We need to see what the situation is and what happens in the next few weeks. I will just try to show what I can do with my quality, and the rest we will see.”
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is navigating a challenging Premier League campaign, but the Carabao Cup offers a beacon of hope. The team’s depth and quality, highlighted by Schar, could be key to their success in the competition. As fans eagerly anticipate the semi-final, Schar’s experience and leadership will be vital in pushing Newcastle towards another potential triumph.
