Sunderland AFC’s interest in young Belgian forward Lucas Stassin has been a topic of discussion, with the player himself confirming past attempts by the club to secure his signature. Stassin, currently making waves at AS Saint-Etienne with seven goal involvements in 13 appearances, was once considered a potential solution to Sunderland’s ongoing search for a reliable centre-forward. Before his move to ASSE from KVC Westerlo last summer, Sunderland had reportedly made a bid for the promising striker, which ultimately fell through.
Lucas Stassin said: “Westerlo had set a high price for my transfer, everything went crazy in the last days of the transfer window. First there was Sunderland. Saint-Etienne arrived a little later. I first thought about the English offer. The division two [Championship] there is a very good championship but it was difficult to see if Sunderland would be able to play at the top. The ambition is to reach the Premier League but it was a risk. At Saint-Etienne, Ligue 1 was assured and I immediately liked the speech of the leaders.”
Despite Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League last season, Stassin opted for the stability of Ligue 1 with AS Saint-Etienne, a decision influenced by the club’s leadership and the assurance of top-flight football. However, Sunderland’s interest in the 20-year-old did not wane. Reports from Foot-Sur7 indicated that the club continued to monitor Stassin’s progress, alongside interest from other clubs such as Brentford, Wolves, Brighton, and several European teams including Benfica, Sporting CP, and RB Leipzig.
Stephane Stassin said: “In my opinion, the best is the Bundesliga. I love that league, I love everything about it: the atmosphere, the stadiums, the style of play. There’s a lot of space for strikers.”
Stassin’s father, Stephane, expressed a preference for the Bundesliga as a future destination for his son, citing the league’s atmosphere and playing style as ideal for strikers. This preference suggests that while Sunderland and other clubs may hold interest, the German league might be a more likely future for the young forward.
In conclusion, Sunderland’s pursuit of Lucas Stassin highlights the club’s ambition to strengthen their attacking options. However, with competition from multiple top-tier clubs and the player’s inclination towards the Bundesliga, securing his signature remains a challenging prospect for the Black Cats.
