Sunderland U21s are gearing up to host Sporting CP at the Stadium of Light on Thursday night in the Premier League International Cup. The young Black Cats have been benefiting from the guidance and influence of first-team players like Luke O’Nien and Dennis Cirkin, who have been instrumental in mentoring the next generation of Sunderland talent. Recently, O’Nien played a pivotal role in a 2-2 draw against Anderlecht, while Cirkin joined him in a commanding 7-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao. As Sunderland U21s prepare for their upcoming clash, the involvement of senior players remains uncertain, but the positive impact of their presence has been evident.
Jenson Jones said: “It’s been great to play alongside some of the first team players. They make the game so much easier, with the knowledge that they have of the game. They’ve massively helped me in these games, in the way that they coach me through it. They’re really good to have alongside, and has helped to push me to be better.”
Jenson Jones added: “These European games have been a really good thing for us this season. They’ve helped us to experience a different brand of football than what we’re used to in the Premier League 2. Coming up against some of the best U21 teams in Europe has tested us a lot, and they’re only going to help us grow and develop as players.”
Jenson Jones continued: “Playing at the Stadium of Light is always a great thing to do, no matter what age category I’m in. It’s the stadium that I’ve grown up watching games at, so to play here is amazing. Last Wednesday was a really positive performance from us. There’s definitely confidence growing in the group after a tough start to the season. However, we’ve really fought back in the last few games, and hopefully we can push on and get a result against Sporting CP on Thursday.”
The Premier League International Cup has provided Sunderland U21s with a unique opportunity to face some of the top U21 teams across Europe. This exposure has been invaluable in developing the young players’ skills and experience, offering a different style of football than they typically encounter in the Premier League 2. The recent performances at the Stadium of Light have been encouraging, with the team showing resilience and growth after a challenging start to the season.
Tickets for the match against Sporting CP are still available, offering fans the chance to witness the promising talent of Sunderland’s future stars in action. The game promises to be an exciting encounter as the U21s aim to build on their recent successes and continue their development on the international stage.
