Jack Grealish
Jack Grealish, on loan at Everton from Manchester City, has experienced a challenging period with the England national team. Despite his contributions at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup, Grealish was not selected for Euro 2024 and has not been called up by current England manager Thomas Tuchel. England’s recent 2-0 victory over Serbia highlighted the depth of talent in their attacking positions, with Bukayo Saka and Ebere Eze finding the net.
Thomas Tuchel said: “You think Anthony Gordon dropped out [through injury] and he still doesn’t get called into it, so I think Thomas Tuchel is quite set.”
Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon’s late withdrawal from the squad did not affect England’s attacking options, as Saka, Marcus Rashford, and Morgan Rogers started behind striker Harry Kane. Eze, Jude Bellingham, and Phil Foden were introduced as substitutes, showcasing the formidable depth in the squad. Additionally, Cole Palmer is expected to be ahead of Grealish in the pecking order once fit, and Noni Madueke has received more recent call-ups than the former Aston Villa player.
Everton manager David Moyes expressed no concern over Tuchel’s decision to omit Grealish from the squad.
David Moyes said: “I get asked about Jack in every press conference. We are pleased with how he is doing and we want him to add to his tally of assists and score a couple of goals more as well – that will help us a lot.”
Grealish’s exclusion from the national team comes as England prepares for a match against Albania, a team already assured of a play-off place. Among those ahead of Grealish in the national team hierarchy is Phil Foden, whose form has been instrumental for both club and country.
Thomas Tuchel said: “Phil is in good shape and Phil can make any team better in an offensive position. In a central position, that is my belief and my trust – he is all smiles. He is full of confidence and you see it in the first touches and the movement.”
Foden’s performance, including an assist for Eze’s decisive goal, underscores why Manchester City allowed their £100m man, Grealish, to leave on loan. As Grealish continues to impress at Everton, the competition for a place in England’s squad remains fierce, leaving him on the outside looking in for now.
