James Garner
Everton midfielder James Garner finds himself at the center of transfer speculation as his current contract is set to expire next summer. The 24-year-old has reportedly attracted interest from Newcastle United, sparking concerns over his future at Goodison Park. However, Everton manager David Moyes remains resolute in his desire to keep Garner, who has become an integral part of the team since Moyes’ arrival.
David Moyes said: “He’s been fantastic since I came in. I didn’t realise probably how good he was. He’s been so good. He’s played great in midfield and he’s played full-back for me as well. I’ve said a couple of times recently he’s probably getting closer to getting talked about for England because of his performances. By the way, England have got so many good players to select from, so for anyone to select a team [is difficult]. I’ve been listening to discussions all week about (Phil) Foden and (Jude) Bellingham, etc., but all I’m saying is Jimmy is one of the group of young English midfield players who maybe in the future has a chance of getting a call-up.”
Garner, who hails from Birkenhead, has made 97 appearances for Everton, scoring three goals, including a memorable long-range strike against Brighton & Hove Albion. His performances have not gone unnoticed, with Newcastle United scouts reportedly keeping a close eye on his progress. According to Football Insider, the Magpies are interested in Garner, whose contract situation could see him leave on a free transfer next summer or for a reduced fee in January.
Despite the speculation, Moyes remains focused on retaining the player and is hopeful that a clause in Garner’s contract could extend his stay at Everton. When questioned about the possibility of a new contract, Moyes expressed uncertainty about the details but suggested there might be an option to extend the deal by another year.
The Liverpool Echo understands that such an extension option exists, potentially alleviating fears of losing Garner for nothing at the end of the season. As it stands, any interest from Newcastle remains speculative, with no concrete offers on the table.
