Alejandro Garnacho

During a recent training session at Pennyhill Park, England’s rugby team embraced a unique approach by incorporating football elements into their preparation. The session was notably influenced by the style of football star Alejandro Garnacho, as the players sought to diversify their skill set ahead of their clash with the All Blacks.
Alex Mitchell said: “I think he was but his first touch was dreadful! I think he has gone for the Garnacho look so I don’t know if he will get any rewards from that! There are loads of things (to learn). The skills set and the hand-eye. The strategies and the way you see the game. There are so many different things that you can learn from each other. We always have football players in here and I think a few of our coaches also go and see football teams and stuff.”
San Underhill added: “I’m not sure. It didn’t look too good.”
Fin Baxter said: “Emma watched training today and then we did a few bits after. She did a bit of kicking with Marcus (Smith). Maro (Itoje) was chatting to her and we were all drifting off, letting two big dogs of their sports talk. So we did the lineout. She was very good – and caught the ball.”
The session highlighted the growing trend of cross-sport collaboration, where rugby players are increasingly looking to football for new strategies and skills. The inclusion of football drills not only provided a fresh perspective but also aimed to enhance the players’ hand-eye coordination and strategic thinking. While the execution may not have been flawless, the experience underscored the potential benefits of such interdisciplinary training methods.
As the team continues their preparation, the influence of football on rugby tactics is expected to evolve, potentially offering new insights and advantages on the field. The integration of diverse sports strategies reflects a broader movement towards innovation and adaptability in professional sports training.
