Marc Guehi crystal palace
Liverpool’s pursuit of Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi has taken a new turn as the Reds are expected to make another attempt to sign the defender next summer. The initial £35 million deal on deadline day fell through when Crystal Palace was unable to secure a replacement for Guehi. Brighton & Hove Albion’s Igor Julio opted for a loan move to West Ham United instead of joining Palace, which led to the cancellation of Guehi’s transfer to Liverpool. With his contract set to expire, Liverpool is now poised to target Guehi on a free transfer, amid interest from other top clubs in England and Europe.
Joe Ledley said: “When you’re doing so well, there’s always going to be clubs floating around, trying to buy your big stars. But he [Adam Wharton] is a fantastic player and central midfielder. I’ve watched him a few times and he’s a really creative player, always on the front foot, always looking forward, finding those passes. Still young, too. He’s represented England as well, so I’m sure there’ll be a lot of clubs interested in him – whether it happens [soon] or in a year or two. You want to keep your best players at Palace and he’s definitely one of them. Time will tell. I think he’s had a fantastic start to the season and the end of last season, so hopefully Palace will hand out a few new contracts soon. Liverpool would be a good move for him, in that midfield area with [Alexis] Mac Allister. Also, Arsenal. Those sort of teams, the ones that get on the ball and are possession-based, he would suit. So it wouldn’t surprise me if those two were interested in January or at the end of season. He’s really confident on the ball, a good passer moving it back and forward, and is always on the front foot. When he has played against Liverpool, he has been fantastic against them and set up a few goals. So, it wouldn’t surprise me if it would be Liverpool or Arsenal [that tried to sign Adam Wharton].”
The former Wales midfielder also highlighted the potential interest in Adam Wharton, another Crystal Palace player, from clubs like Liverpool and Arsenal. Wharton’s performances have not gone unnoticed, and his ability to play a creative role in midfield makes him an attractive prospect for top teams.
While Crystal Palace is keen to retain their talents, reports indicate they may consider selling Guehi in January to avoid losing him for free in the summer. The decision weighs heavily on the club’s financial considerations versus their performance ambitions in the league. Ledley expressed the dilemma, noting the pros and cons of such a decision, with the potential for European qualification possibly offsetting the financial loss.
The Eagles’ chairman, Steve Parish, previously cited the club’s European campaign as a reason for retaining Guehi, despite interest from Liverpool. Head coach Oliver Glasner was also reportedly adamant about keeping Guehi, even threatening to resign if the player left. However, with the January transfer window approaching, the situation remains fluid, and Guehi’s future at Crystal Palace is uncertain.
