Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon is facing renewed injury concerns after hobbling off with a hip issue during the UEFA Champions League match against Athletic Bilbao. The England international was substituted just before halftime, raising doubts about his availability for upcoming fixtures, including England’s World Cup qualifiers.
Eddie Howe said: “I have not had a full rundown from the medical team. But it seems like a recurrence of the hip injury that has been plaguing him in recent weeks. So we will assess that and see what happens.”
Gordon’s injury woes appear to have started back in March during a World Cup qualifier against Albania at Wembley, where he first sustained the hip problem. Despite being a key player for Newcastle, his recurring injury raises questions about his fitness for the club’s upcoming Premier League match against Brentford and his potential selection for England’s national team.
Eddie Howe said: “We had a quick turnaround for this game. We learn a lot. This format is really good, more games but it’s a bigger test when you return to the Premier League. It’s been good to have a game off the back of West Ham, we’ve put that away and we scored two goals.”
Newcastle United managed to secure a 2-0 victory against Athletic Bilbao, a much-needed win after their recent loss to West Ham. Howe expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, especially in the European competition, and emphasized the importance of maintaining consistency as they prepare for their next Champions League match against Marseille.
Eddie Howe said: “Across the board, it’s consistency in our performance wherever we play. Now we go away in the Champions League. Marseille away will be incredibly difficult.”
In addition to Gordon’s injury, Newcastle faced another challenge as Bruno Guimaraes battled through illness during the match. Despite feeling the strain, the captain remained committed to giving his all for the club.
Bruno Guimaraes said: “For me, it was like something was holding me with 10kg on my back. For this club, I will do everything.”
As Newcastle United navigates a demanding schedule, the club’s ability to manage player fitness and maintain performance levels will be crucial.
