Bruno Guimaraes
Newcastle United’s captain, Bruno Guimaraes, has recounted a frightening incident that occurred during a flight to Tokyo for Brazil’s international match against Japan. The aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing due to a cracked window, compelling the flight to return to Amsterdam.
Bruno Guimaraes said: “Two windows broke in the middle of the flight. We were in the middle of the air and could not stop, so we had to fly back. I’ve never seen this before. I was sleeping. I just woke up and said, ‘Two hours to come back to Amsterdam?’ I didn’t understand anything. But after they explained to me that it was moving a lot during the flight. I was not scared at first. After, when I realised, I was a little bit. But during the flight, I was okay. Joelinton was awake and when I woke up, he said: ‘We are going back’. I couldn’t believe it. I said, ‘Are you serious?’”
The unexpected turn of events resulted in a prolonged journey for Guimaraes and his teammate Joelinton, taking a total of 30 hours to reach their destination. This delay left both players dealing with jetlag and a tight schedule to prepare for Newcastle’s Premier League match against Brighton.
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe had previously commented on the challenges faced by players during international duties, especially when it involves long-haul flights for friendly matches.
Eddie Howe reflected: “I mean, what those players do that play for their countries, that have to travel those kind of distances – I know it sounds easy – you’re going to play for your country, you’re going to fly halfway across the world, it’s a privilege, and don’t get me wrong, the players know that. But it is hard and it’s hard on their brains, their bodies.”
The incident highlights the physical and mental toll that international travel can impose on players, impacting their readiness for club commitments. Despite the ordeal, both Guimaraes and Joelinton managed to return in time for their club duties, showcasing their resilience and commitment to Newcastle United.
