Chelsea faced a disappointing defeat against Sunderland on Saturday, with Marc Cucurella highlighting the need for the team to enhance their game management skills. The Blues, who initially took the lead through Alejandro Garnacho’s early goal, were unable to maintain their advantage, eventually succumbing to a 2-1 loss at Stamford Bridge. This setback has added to Chelsea’s struggles this season, as they have already dropped eight points from winning positions.
Marc Cucurella said: “It’s a really tough one to take. We need to improve with these matches. I think we need to learn to manage the game better. We scored early, dominated at that stage but then we let the opponents back into it. We need to learn to kill games off when we are on top. We need to learn to be better against teams that come with a gameplan such as Sunderland where they stay very narrow and compact.”
Cucurella added: “We know that a lot of teams are trying to use long throws more and we need to manage them better. We worked on them yesterday because we knew Sunderland will look to use long throws and be direct from set-pieces. I think maybe we relaxed a little bit and they punished us. It’s no excuse. We need to learn from this and make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
Sunderland’s equalizer came in the 22nd minute through Wilson Isidor, and despite Chelsea’s efforts, it was the visitors who clinched the victory with a late goal from substitute Chemsdine Talbi. This result leaves Enzo Maresca’s side in mid-table, following a four-game winning streak across all competitions. The defeat also highlighted Chelsea’s vulnerability to long throw-ins, a tactic that has troubled them earlier in the season.
The loss to Sunderland underlines the challenges Chelsea face in maintaining consistency and closing out matches. Cucurella’s comments reflect a broader concern within the team about their ability to adapt to opponents’ strategies and capitalize on early leads. As Chelsea looks to regroup, the focus will be on addressing these issues to avoid similar setbacks in future fixtures.
