Chelsea’s recent form has been a cause for concern, as their early lead against Sunderland, courtesy of Alejandro Garnacho, was neutralized by Wilson Isidor’s equalizer. The match ended in a draw, leaving Chelsea’s position in the Premier League standings precarious.
Paul Merson said: “Well impressed with Sunderland today, I wasn’t with Chelsea. I thought they’d struggle. They need Delap back badly, they need a focal point. Guiu played up front and I think he touched the ball nine, 10 times. You can’t do that in a team that are supposed to be dominating the ball. Chelsea ran out of ideas. They had winger after winger but half of them don’t go past anyone. Joao Pedro looked lost as a No.10.”
The Italian reflected: “I think we were not good enough in general. We know that in the moment you drop a little bit you can lose points against any team in the Premier League. It is so difficult. Overall we were not good enough. We started well with the goal. Even with that the feeling was we were losing in terms of physicality and second balls. Against this type of team it’s always dangerous. It’s always difficult, they bring seven, eight players inside the box. We tried to prepare that but it can happen. We were not good enough.”
Chelsea’s inability to capitalize on their early advantage has left them vulnerable to being overtaken by rivals in the league. Crystal Palace and Aston Villa are poised to leapfrog Chelsea with victories, while Everton could match them on points depending on their result against Tottenham. The Blues’ upcoming fixture against Wolves in the Carabao Cup will be crucial as they attempt to regain form. The absence of a key player like Delap has been felt, as Chelsea managed seven points in the three league matches he featured in, compared to the same number across the six matches without him.
The team’s struggle to maintain consistency and adapt to physical challenges in matches has been a recurring theme this season. With the Premier League’s competitive nature, Chelsea must address these issues promptly to avoid further slippage in the standings.
