Thomas Meunier
Belgian defender Thomas Meunier, who played for Borussia Dortmund from 2020 until his departure in February 2024, has disclosed that he was approached with a potential transfer offer to Manchester United. During his tenure at Dortmund, Meunier claims that an unnamed coach at United attempted to steer him towards a particular agent to facilitate a move to the Premier League giants. This revelation sheds light on the intricate relationships between clubs, coaches, and agents in the world of football transfers.
Thomas Meunier said: “When I was at Dortmund. I could have signed for Manchester United. I didn’t have an agent. And, in fact, the coach there at the time clearly directed me to his agent so I could sign for Manchester United. I refused, and I didn’t sign. Otherwise, you would have known… But there you go.”
Meunier added: “There’s a lot of money at stake. And even coaches work with agents specifically to place players and get paid. I have 45 examples like that. Now, I can’t prove them all, so I won’t name any names. But it’s something that, in my opinion, still happens far too frequently.”
Meunier’s comments highlight the complex dynamics and potential ethical concerns surrounding football transfers. The defender did not specify whether the coach involved was United’s head coach or another staff member, nor did he provide details on the timing of the alleged offer. This incident raises questions about the role of agents and the extent of their influence in securing player moves.
During his time at Dortmund, Meunier was not only on Manchester United’s radar but also attracted interest from Barcelona. In 2022, he discussed Barcelona’s consideration of a potential move, indicating his profile fit the club’s requirements. Despite these opportunities, Meunier eventually transferred to Trabzonspor before moving to Lille, where he played a significant role in their European campaigns, including matches against top clubs like Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Liverpool.
Meunier’s revelations contribute to ongoing discussions about transparency and fairness in football transfers, emphasizing the need for greater scrutiny and regulation of the relationships between clubs, coaches, and agents.
