Matheus Nunes has emerged as a key player for Manchester City this season, transitioning from a challenging start in midfield to becoming a reliable right-back. After joining from Molineux in the summer of 2023, Nunes initially found it difficult to secure a place in City’s star-studded midfield. However, injuries and the January departure of Kyle Walker opened up opportunities for him in defense. His defining moment came when he scored a crucial winner against Aston Villa at the Etihad, which played a significant role in securing City’s spot in the Champions League this season.
Pep Guardiola said: “That game helped us to be in the Champions League this season. It was a battle against many clubs and that goal helped us a lot after the setback in Southampton. It meant we had to go to Fulham to win. Always it’s been really tough, especially at Villa, it’s a really good test for how we are.”
Nunes’ adaptation from midfield to defense has been remarkable. Initially teased by his teammates for his new role as a right-back, he has since become a fixture in the position following Abdukodir Khusanov’s injury. His consistent performances have solidified his place in the team, with his recent strong showing against Villarreal further cementing his starting position for the upcoming match at Villa Park.
Guardiola continued: “He can be an incredible right back. He’s a midfielder with incredible physicality. It’s a question of him now. We talk a lot about that, it’s just change your mind and feel that you can feel that. He has special attributes to play on the sides. He has been unbelievable in the last two or three games.”
City’s previous encounter at Villa Park last December ended in a disappointing 2-1 loss, marking their sixth defeat in eight Premier League matches during a difficult period for Guardiola. However, with Nunes’ resurgence and the team’s improved form, City aims to deliver a much stronger performance this time around.
