Viktor Gyokeres
Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres delivered a standout performance in a commanding 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid, scoring twice to end his recent goal drought. This performance has not only boosted his confidence but also earned him praise from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who is optimistic about Gyokeres’ future contributions to the team.
Mikel Arteta said: “Delighted as he fully deserved it. The work rate he brings to the team is outstanding. We value a lot of things that he does for the team, and it was the biggest smile on his face today, and look at his teammates. Hopefully, this is the start of some beautiful sequences.”
Gyokeres’ impressive display against Atletico Madrid was further underscored by his leading statistics in the Premier League. According to Opta, Gyokeres is at the forefront in applying ‘high pressure’ in the final third, with 199 actions recorded. He also leads in high pressures applied within the opposition penalty area, tallying 90 such actions. Moreover, the Swedish forward has made more off-the-ball runs into the penalty area than any other player in the league this season, with 54 runs.
While Arteta’s assessment of Gyokeres highlights his unique contributions to the team, former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer offered a contrasting view during his appearance on Match of the Day. Shearer acknowledged Gyokeres’ strengths but emphasized the need for improvement in his goalscoring abilities.
Alan Shearer said: “He’s not in the league of the three we showed in the previous clip [Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, and Kylian Mbappe], far from that. But I think he brings a different strength, there’s no doubt that he will have to improve his goalscoring, as you said, he’s only got three. But one of his strengths which has suited Arsenal is he actually goes in behind.”
Gyokeres’ ability to create space and opportunities for his teammates by drawing defenders deeper has been a valuable asset for Arsenal. As the Premier League season progresses, Arteta and the Arsenal faithful will be hoping that Gyokeres can build on this performance and continue to make significant contributions to the team’s success.
