Aston Villa’s goalkeeper, Emi Martinez, has reassured fans about his fitness ahead of their crucial Premier League encounter against Tottenham. Martinez, who recently posted a social media update showcasing his recovery, has been dealing with a calf issue that kept him out of several matches earlier this season. However, he appears to be on the mend and ready to return to action.
Unai Emery said: “He trained this morning [Friday] and had a small problem [before the internationals], like other players. Maybe we are focusing on Emi Martínez because of some circumstances in the past, but it’s normal. Everything that happened in the last matches — if he wasn’t feeling 100 per cent because of a small pain — that’s normal; we don’t want to take risks. Like other players we have, like Watkins, sometimes they also have problems. He had a calf injury in the warm-up against Feyenoord, which is why he didn’t play. He recovered in time for the Burnley match and was fit to start. There’s no mystery — he got injured, he recovered in four days, and that’s why he played.”
Lionel Scaloni said: “Dibu always wants to play, like everyone else. That’s great for us — it’s important that he wants to be here. Then, in November, we’ll probably try something different — that’s the idea we have.”
Martinez’s fitness has been a topic of interest, especially after he missed Aston Villa’s first Europa League match against Bologna and was subsequently sidelined for the game against Feyenoord due to a calf problem. Despite these setbacks, he managed to recover swiftly and played a significant role in Villa’s 2–1 victory over Burnley, marking his fifth start of the season.
The Argentine international also participated in both of Argentina’s recent matches against Venezuela and Puerto Rico. Although he was substituted in the second half of the latter game, it was part of Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni’s strategy to rotate the squad ahead of the November internationals.
As Villa prepares to face Tottenham, Emery’s comments suggest that Martinez is in good shape and ready to contribute to the team’s efforts. His return is timely, as Villa seeks to maintain momentum in their Premier League campaign.
