Mo Salah
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah recently showcased his prowess on the international stage, scoring twice in Egypt’s 3-0 victory over Djibouti, securing their spot in the upcoming World Cup. Despite being rested for the subsequent match against Guinea-Bissau, Salah returned home to celebrate with his teammates. However, his club performances have not mirrored his international success, leading to growing scrutiny over his form. Salah has managed three goals and three assists in ten appearances this season, but he has not found the net from open play in the Premier League since the opening day.
Several factors have been suggested for Salah’s dip in form, including the emotional impact of Diogo Jota’s tragic death, which deeply affected the Liverpool squad. Additionally, Salah’s age, the natural decline in his performance, and the pressures of a new lucrative contract have been cited. Liverpool’s overall underwhelming form, despite a £450 million investment in new players, has also contributed to the narrative. The team is still working to integrate new signings, with Salah forming connections with his new teammates.
Emmanuel Petit said: “The understanding between Trent and Salah on the right flank was excellent. Trent supported Salah with his passing, and they seemed to play with a telepathic connection, understanding each other’s movements very well. Yes, I believe he is suffering from that loss, but as I said, this is in the past. With new signings, it takes time. When you join big clubs like Liverpool, especially as the reigning champions, it’s very difficult for new signings to integrate.”
Don Hutchison remarked on Liverpool’s missing players, particularly highlighting Luis Diaz’s absence. “Another player that I think they’re missing massively is Luis Diaz. He scored a good goal against Eintracht Frankfurt. He faced the full-back up, chopped it onto his left foot, and stuck the ball in the stanchion. They’ve lost some massive players.”
The departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid has been a significant blow to Liverpool. Alexander-Arnold was a stabilizing force at right-back, forming a crucial partnership with Salah. His exit has left a void, with replacements like Dominik Szoboszlai, Conor Bradley, and Jeremie Frimpong experiencing varied success in the role. This transition period has been challenging for Liverpool as they strive to replace the creativity that Alexander-Arnold provided.
The Reds have invested heavily, including the signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for up to £116 million, to bolster their squad. However, the team has yet to fully gel, and the absence of Alexander-Arnold’s influence is palpable. As Liverpool prepares to return to domestic action after the international break, Salah and his teammates face the challenge of silencing critics and improving their performances before the anticipated clash with Real Madrid on November 4.
