Adam Wharton
Chelsea is reportedly considering a move for Crystal Palace’s rising star, Adam Wharton, as they seek to bolster their midfield options. The 21-year-old midfielder has been impressive since joining Crystal Palace in February 2024, drawing attention from some of the Premier League’s top clubs. With Chelsea’s current midfield setup facing challenges, Wharton could be a valuable addition to their squad.
Joe Cole said: “They’re going for everyone, Chelsea, aren’t they? All the top young players. Moises Caicedo is a top player, but adding Adam Wharton alongside Enzo Fernandez would create a formidable midfield. That is proper. It would be a very, very hard defence to get by. Going forward, they’ve got a lot. Sky will show at least 215 live Premier League games this season, an increase of up to 100 more. They could support that with a top-quality player from the English squad. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if Wharton went to Chelsea, and they’d look at that as an asset.”
Steve Parish said: “I think Adam at some point will want to play either in the Champions League with us, if we can make that happen, or probably with another club. He’s an extraordinary talent. I think right now, and I can’t speak for Adam, but I think he is focused on his time at Crystal Palace. He had a broken season last season with the groin issues that he had that a lot of young players get. It is a difficult programme for us right now. The fact of the matter is he’s got a long contract to run. There is no pressure on us to do it, and I don’t think there is any real pressure from the player either.”
Chelsea’s current midfield lineup includes Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, both of whom are key players for the club. However, the backup options have been a point of concern. Romeo Lavia, despite being a significant part of the Chelsea setup, has struggled with injuries, impacting his availability. Meanwhile, Dario Essugo is seen as a promising talent for the future, and Andrey Santos offers versatility across various midfield positions.
The potential acquisition of Adam Wharton could address these concerns by adding depth and quality to Chelsea’s midfield. Wharton’s performances at Crystal Palace have showcased his potential to compete at the highest level, making him an attractive prospect for clubs aiming for Champions League success.
As Chelsea continues to explore options to strengthen their squad, Wharton’s future remains uncertain. While Crystal Palace is keen to retain their young star, the allure of Champions League football could influence Wharton’s decision in the coming months.
