Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s head coach, has accepted a one-match suspension and an £8,000 fine following his dramatic celebration of Estevao Willian’s last-minute goal against Liverpool. The incident, which occurred during chaotic scenes at Stamford Bridge, saw Maresca sprint down the touchline to join his ecstatic players. The Football Association (FA) charged Maresca with misconduct, alleging that he acted in an improper manner and used abusive or insulting words, leading to his dismissal in the 96th minute.
Enzo Maresca said: “It was a huge emotion [against Liverpool]. It’s my second season at Chelsea and it was the first time we won at home in the last minute. The sending-off? [I’ve said] many times, football is passion, instinct. I probably didn’t have time to think. It was an instinctive reaction, but I think it was worth it.”
Maresca’s recent comments at the Trento Sports Festival reveal that his emotions got the better of him during the match. This is not the first time Maresca has faced a touchline ban, highlighting his passionate approach to the game. Despite the ban, Maresca will still be present at the City Ground this weekend, seated in the directors’ box. He will not be prohibited from entering Chelsea’s dressing room, allowing him to address his players before, during, and after the match.
Enzo Maresca said: “Chelsea is a legendary, enormous club. The strategy now is to proceed with long contracts, trust young players.”
Maresca also spoke to the Italian newspaper Gazetta dello Sport, expressing his enthusiasm for his role at Chelsea. Under his leadership, the club secured two trophies last season: the Conference League and the Club World Cup. Maresca’s commitment to the club’s strategy of long-term contracts and nurturing young talent reflects his dedication to Chelsea’s future success.
