Marc Guiu
Marc Guiu, the former Sunderland loanee, has opened up about his short-lived spell at the Stadium of Light, which was abruptly cut short earlier this summer. Initially brought in from Chelsea on a season-long loan as part of Sunderland’s post-promotion recruitment strategy, Guiu’s time with the Black Cats ended prematurely due to an injury to Liam Delap. This prompted Chelsea to recall the promising Spaniard after just three first-team appearances. Despite his brief tenure, Guiu remains optimistic about his future and is currently on international duty with Spain’s U21s.
Marc Guiu said: “We initially decided to go to Sunderland with great enthusiasm and excitement to get some minutes in the top flight and get some experience. In the end, there was an injury [to Delap], and I had to return to Chelsea, now with great enthusiasm and training hard every day. In the end, it was all a bit chaotic, but in the end, I’m a person who faces everything with the utmost positivity. And that’s how I faced it, now enjoying every moment, because a footballer’s career is short.”
He added: “Well, in the end, when Nico said no [to returning to Chelsea from Bayern], they called me, we talked about it, and it was quick. In the end, I want to succeed at Chelsea. And that’s how it was.”
When asked if he was disappointed about missing out on the opportunity to register more minutes at Sunderland, Guiu responded: “No, no, never disappointment. I believe that every action I take in my career is because I want to. And that’s it, I’m going to fight in every training session, in every game, every minute I have to play as many minutes as possible… Now I’m at Chelsea, and that’s where I am. I’m from Chelsea, the best club in the world for me right now.”
Guiu’s comments reflect a positive outlook despite the challenges he faced during his brief stint at Sunderland. His return to Chelsea was influenced by the unexpected circumstances surrounding Nicolas Jackson’s move to Bayern Munich, which opened up an opportunity for him back at Stamford Bridge. While Guiu’s future at Chelsea remains a work in progress, his determination to succeed at the club is evident. Meanwhile, Sunderland’s decision to sign Brian Brobbey from Ajax on a permanent deal following Guiu’s departure suggests the club’s continued ambition to strengthen their squad.
As the January transfer window approaches, speculation about Guiu’s potential return to Sunderland has surfaced, although it remains uncertain whether the Black Cats are interested in re-signing him. For now, Guiu is focused on making the most of his time at Chelsea and contributing to the team’s success.
