Trai Hume
Sunderland defender Trai Hume made a significant impact on the international stage by scoring his first senior goal for Northern Ireland in their 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Slovakia. This momentous occasion took place on Friday evening, as Hume delivered a stunning left-footed volley from the edge of the box, capitalizing on a mistake by Slovakian goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. The goal marked Hume’s first in 25 caps for Northern Ireland under manager Michael O’Neill.
Trai Hume said: “We’re all even on six points and now the game on Monday [against Germany] is even bigger than it was before. We’ll go into it, prepare, recover and be ready to try and win. It was a great feeling, my first goal, and hopefully, I can chip in with some more. I’m not much of a goal-scorer so it’s not something I’d have thought of. It’s one of the moments you’ll cherish for the rest of your life. I had a lot of family there, girlfriend, so it’s good to have them there to enjoy it.”
Hume’s strike was not only a personal milestone but also crucial for Northern Ireland’s World Cup qualifying campaign. The victory placed them on equal points with other contenders, intensifying the significance of their upcoming match against Germany. Reflecting on the team’s performance, Hume expressed pride in their tactical execution and determination to maintain their strong home record.
Hume added: “Throughout the week we spoke about getting a lot of pressure high up the pitch, bringing the game to them. We’re at home, we want to ask questions and work hard. We were able to do that. Michael gave us the gameplan and all we had to do was go out and do that. I thought we were excellent through the 90 minutes and thoroughly deserved the three points. We were the better team, we brought the game to them. We probably could have had more on the night, we created a lot of chances. Hopefully, it’ll be the same again on Monday.”
The 23-year-old defender’s achievement was celebrated by his family and girlfriend, who were present to witness the memorable goal. Hume’s comments highlighted the emotional significance of the moment and his aspirations to contribute more goals in the future.
In a related note, Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill praised another Sunderland player, Daniel Ballard, for his rise to the Premier League. O’Neill acknowledged Ballard’s resilience and determination in overcoming setbacks, such as his departure from Arsenal, and making his way through loan spells at Blackpool and Millwall before joining Sunderland. O’Neill emphasized the importance of self-belief and perseverance in reaching the top level of football, qualities that Ballard exemplifies.
As Northern Ireland prepares for their next challenge against Germany, Hume’s breakthrough goal and the team’s strong performance provide a boost of confidence. The squad aims to build on their success and continue their pursuit of World Cup qualification.
