Steven Gerrard Manager
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is reportedly in discussions to potentially replace Russell Martin as the manager of Rangers. Sky Sports News has indicated that Gerrard is expected to engage in talks regarding a return to Ibrox sometime this week. Gerrard previously led Rangers to a league title in 2021 before departing for Aston Villa, where his tenure was short-lived. He managed to secure only 13 wins out of 40 matches before being succeeded by Unai Emery, who has since guided Villa back into European competition.
Simon Jordan said: “I’m not very impressed with him as a football manager. I would make that clear that my impression of him was based upon the fact that I didn’t think he did a particularly good job at Aston Villa. I think he got found out there at that level. I didn’t admire the choice of going to Saudi from a footballing point of view. I’m not interested in what Steven Gerrard did playing for Liverpool. I’m interested in what Steven Gerrard can do with the problem that I’ve got and the reasons why I have reservations that it isn’t a shoo-in, it’s not a gimme. We have a conversation, you might not fancy working for me and I might not fancy you working for me. So we’ll have this conversation in a very blunt format, which is how are you going to fix my problems? What are you going to do to get me out of the problem that I’m in, what is your vision of how it should be done? Are you going do the same thing as you did last time? I’d want to get right into the understanding of the fellow rather than the media perception of him and also the reasons why he wasn’t successful at Aston Villa, the reasons why he took the Saudi job and ultimately getting to the bottom of that, and what problems he’d fix for me.”
Gerrard’s managerial career has been under scrutiny, particularly following his stint at Aston Villa, which did not meet expectations. His decision to move to Saudi Arabia also raised eyebrows, with some questioning his motivations from a footballing perspective. Despite these criticisms, Gerrard’s previous success at Rangers, where he broke Celtic’s dominance by clinching the league title, showcases his potential as a manager.
The upcoming discussions with Rangers could mark a significant chapter in Gerrard’s managerial journey, offering him a chance to rebuild his reputation and re-establish his credentials in European football. The outcome of these talks will be closely monitored, as both Gerrard and Rangers look to navigate their respective futures.
