Daniel Farke
Leeds United’s formidable home unbeaten streak was brought to an end on a rainy afternoon at Elland Road, as they suffered a league defeat for the first time in over a year. The match saw two unfortunate deflections, both involving Pascal Struijk, which resulted in goals against Leeds. Despite the loss, the return to the Premier League was always going to challenge this impressive run, especially against a team with Champions League credentials.
Thomas Frank said: “Leeds played well but, as Daniel Farke reiterated, Leeds need to turn these performances into points.”
Daniel Farke said: “My message is to not moan about it [misfortune] too much, and think about what if and where we could be as a new promoted side. It’s also quite normal that sometimes you are unlucky not to win more points. If you think about it and doubt yourself or feel sorry for yourself, this is then when you struggle to deliver performances like this. So it’s just like, deliver a performance like this, and we will be fine.”
Despite the setback, Leeds have accumulated eight points from seven games, a respectable tally for a newly promoted side. However, Farke emphasized the importance of converting strong performances into tangible results to avoid regretting missed opportunities later in the season. The team has experienced a string of unfortunate events, including deflected goals and a bizarre own goal against Fulham, which have contributed to their current standing.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who had several opportunities to score, was unable to find the net, largely due to the efforts of Guglielmo Vicario, who made several impressive saves. Calvert-Lewin’s first-half effort went over the bar, and his subsequent attempts were thwarted by Vicario’s quick reflexes. Despite these challenges, Calvert-Lewin’s overall performance was commendable, as he maintained pressure in the final third.
Daniel Farke advised Calvert-Lewin: “If he, right now, thinks too much about goals and wants to force it too much, it will never work. So what he has to do is exactly what he does for the team. Relentless workload. Bring yourself into good positions. And then sometimes you also need a bit of luck and perhaps a deflected coffee goal. Then you find it a bit more easy. Yes, he had good chances and could, or perhaps should, have scored. But it was a good performance from him.”
The defeat leaves Leeds just four points above the relegation zone, highlighting the importance of upcoming fixtures in their quest for Premier League survival. Despite the early-season challenges, there are positives to draw from, particularly the fact that Leeds are not currently in the bottom three. The focus now shifts to maintaining momentum and capitalizing on future opportunities to secure their place in the league
