Chelsea’s recent clash with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge ended in a dramatic victory for the Blues, but the celebrations might have come at a cost for Cole Palmer. The young midfielder, who has been battling a groin injury, seemed to have worsened his condition during the team’s exuberant celebrations following Estevao Willian’s stoppage-time winner. The goal, which sealed a 2-1 victory over the reigning Premier League champions, sparked wild scenes across the stadium, with even manager Enzo Maresca joining in on the touchline.
Cole Palmer said: “I don’t have any update at the moment [on Palmer]. And while there is hope that Palmer could return in a few weeks, one man who won’t be present is Maresca. The dismissal also saw Maresca banned from conducting his post-match press duties.”
Willy Caballero said: “He’s OK, he’s OK. He was so happy after the game. Unfortunately, he cannot be here because of the card, but he was so happy and he wanted me to do the press conference, but also he wanted me to praise the players because of the effort that they’ve done today. We believe that we deserve the victory after the chances that we created and how we played. Thanks to football and thanks for the effort of the players, we scored in the last seconds and we got the three points today. I believe it’s because not just this week, but a few weeks that we’ve been holding our emotions because the last couple of games we’ve been playing well, but we finished a few games with ten players and we couldn’t win the game.”
Willy Caballero continued: “Today was really important, but at the same time we finished with a back four that is not usual, four full-backs. The players did it really well, the players on the bench were ready to go and ready to play.”
The match saw Chelsea’s Estevao Willian score a last-gasp goal, leading to jubilant celebrations. However, the excitement took a toll on Palmer, who was seen grimacing and clutching his groin after being jumped on by teammate Jorell Hato. This incident raises concerns about the duration of Palmer’s recovery, as the club hopes for his return in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s assistant coach Willy Caballero stepped in for the post-match press conference following Maresca’s dismissal. Caballero expressed the manager’s delight with the team’s performance and emphasized the importance of the victory, which was hard-earned despite recent challenges. He highlighted the team’s resilience, especially given the unusual defensive lineup featuring four full-backs.
Chelsea’s triumph over Liverpool marks a significant moment in their season, as they aim to build momentum and overcome recent setbacks. However, the focus now shifts to Palmer’s recovery and the team’s ability to maintain their form in his absence.
