Willy Caballero
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca faced an unexpected dismissal after enthusiastically celebrating Estevao Willian’s stoppage-time goal, which secured a dramatic victory for the Blues. The incident occurred during a tense match against Brighton, where Maresca’s exuberance led to his second yellow card, resulting in a red card and his removal from the touchline. This dismissal is the third for Chelsea in their recent matches, following red cards for Trevoh Chalobah and Joao Pedro in previous games.
Willy Caballero said: “It’s something special for any manager, no manager can hold inside what they feel. Unfortunately for him he was already on a yellow. We are all human beings. We have been players, we love to see that. He’s so happy now. Of course he cannot be here now but we are so happy that we achieved the three points in the last seconds. We are so happy and so proud. The players did a fantastic job. Now is a good break for many of them and hopefully we can recover a few more players and start the new cycle of games with energy.”
Willy Caballero added: “He’s always paying many things for us. So in this case, we cannot say nothing for him, but for sure we’re going to have a dinner and we’re going to talk about it. Because I don’t want to do the press conference for many games.”
Willy Caballero continued: “We suffer another red card today (laughs) but we finish strong. We know that we are a good team that plays football and we create chances in the first half. We deserve the second goal in the second half. In the way we fought today, with four full-backs in the back four is incredible. All of us are so proud of our players.”
The match saw Chelsea initially take the lead with a stunning strike from Moises Caicedo, only for Cody Gakpo to level the score in the second half. Despite the pressure, Chelsea pushed forward and were rewarded with Estevao Willian’s decisive goal. Maresca’s dismissal, however, meant that he could not fulfill his post-match media obligations, leaving assistant coach Willy Caballero to step in.
Caballero expressed his satisfaction with the team’s unity and resilience, despite the challenges posed by the red card. He praised the players’ efforts and highlighted the importance of the upcoming break to recharge and prepare for the next series of matches. As Chelsea navigates these disciplinary setbacks, the focus remains on maintaining momentum and building on their recent performances.
