Nottingham Forest’s Europa League campaign took a disappointing turn as they suffered a 3-2 defeat against FC Midtjylland at the City Ground. This marked a significant moment for the club, as they were playing European football on home soil for the first time in nearly three decades. However, the night ended on a sour note with boos echoing from the stands and fans voicing their discontent with manager Ange Postecoglou.
Ange Postecoglou said: “The fans are disappointed. They’re entitled to have an opinion on it. I heard their opinion. Nothing surprises me anymore in football. I guess it’s just the climate we’re in and it seems that’s the way things are going. That’s nothing I can control. My responsibility is to make sure we get some wins for this football club and progress it. That’s what I’ll be focused on.”
Postecoglou added: “Not to me, in terms of me doing my role. Of course I would prefer people were optimistic in their outlook about what I’m doing, but I can only change that by winning games of football. It’s not unfamiliar territory for me. I really believe in the process of what we’re doing and I don’t think we’re far away from being a team that eradicates the situation we’re in at the moment and gets the results we need.”
He continued: “Nothing I saw tonight changes any of that. I get the mood around the place isn’t going to be great. I understand people’s attitude at the moment, particularly towards me, but I never worry about that. It’s not unfamiliar territory for me. I really believe we’re on the right track and I really believe when we get through this period of uncertainty we’ll be on a good path. I firmly believe that will happen.”
The defeat to FC Midtjylland has extended Forest’s winless streak to six games since Postecoglou took over from Nuno Espirito Santo last month. The pressure is mounting on the former Tottenham Hotspur manager as fans expressed their frustration with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning.” Despite the challenging start, Postecoglou remains optimistic about turning things around, emphasizing his belief in the team’s process and potential.
This latest setback underscores the uphill task facing Postecoglou as he seeks to win over the Nottingham Forest faithful. The passionate home crowd, who long for a return to the club’s glory days, have been vocal in their dissatisfaction, making it clear that results need to improve swiftly. As Forest navigate this turbulent period, the focus will be on securing victories to alter the current narrative and restore confidence among supporters.
