Chelsea faced a challenging encounter against Brighton & Hove Albion, ultimately succumbing to a 3-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge. The match took a turn when Trevoh Chalobah received a straight red card in the 53rd minute, leaving Chelsea with ten men. Despite Enzo Fernandez giving the Blues an early lead, Brighton capitalized on their numerical advantage to secure a comeback victory.
Jorrel Hato said: “I would say the first half was good from our side. We had a lot of possession, we created chances, we scored to make it 1-0 as well. We were playing well and scored a good goal. In the second half, after 10 minutes we got a red card and went down to 10 men. Of course in the last game against Manchester United in the first half we also had a red card and now it happened again. You can see it just affects the game, when we are down to 10 men against 11, and we did it for nearly 40 minutes on Saturday. You can see it’s very difficult. I think we could have done better, for sure. We’re very disappointed because we knew it would be difficult, but I think we didn’t give a lot of chances away before their equaliser.”
The match began positively for Chelsea, with Enzo Fernandez’s first-half header putting them in the lead. However, the game changed dramatically after Chalobah’s dismissal for a foul on Diego Gomez, which was deemed to have denied a clear goalscoring opportunity. Brighton took full advantage of the situation, with Danny Welbeck equalizing through a header from Yankuba Minteh’s cross. Maxim De Cuyper then put Brighton ahead in the added time, and Welbeck sealed the victory after a defensive mix-up by Chelsea.
Hato’s comments highlight Chelsea’s ongoing struggle with maintaining discipline, as this was the second consecutive match where they were reduced to ten men. The team’s inability to manage the game after the red card allowed Brighton to dominate the latter stages, ultimately leading to their defeat. Chelsea’s defensive frailties were exposed once again, raising concerns for the team as they look to improve their performance in upcoming fixtures.
