Bournemouth managed to extend their unbeaten run to five games with a dramatic late equalizer against Leeds United at Elland Road. In a match characterized by its physical intensity, the hosts initially had the upper hand. However, Bournemouth’s persistence paid off as Junior Kroupi netted a stoppage-time goal to level the score at 2-2, following a tactical reshuffle from manager Andoni Iraola.
Andoni Iraola said: “At the end we were obviously we had to risk [it], we put on all the offensive players that we had on the bench. Tav has played everywhere. I think he has finished at right back, Brooksy in the middle. We tried to put because we were not arriving clearly. And the game has been for me very, very physical. I think we struggled in the first aerial duels, and not only in set pieces, or only when they were playing direct with Calvert-Lewin. They have a very physical midfield. Sean Longstaff and Ampadu, Struijk. They are good winning these second balls. And normally we are a team that we are good in those scenarios and the more open for us the better.”
Iraola continued: “But I think the Leeds also have been very good there. They have been very good on the duels and fighting for the ball. We were arriving to good situations. We were hurting [them], especially from the left side. But when they equalised 1-1, I think from there until they scored 2-1 we haven’t played at all. And after obviously they also have to defend the result. You have to make more offensive changes. You start to push them back and then you can have your chances. But they are going to be like not clear chances because they have a lot of players defending. So it has to be like a cross, a set piece. And it has arrived like this.”
The match saw Bournemouth initially fall behind after Leeds took a 2-1 lead, capitalizing on their physical dominance and effective midfield play. Leeds’ midfield trio, including Sean Longstaff, Ethan Ampadu, and Pascal Struijk, excelled in winning aerial duels and second balls, making it difficult for Bournemouth to establish their usual rhythm. Despite the challenges, Iraola’s tactical adjustments, including the introduction of forwards Ben Gannon-Doak and Kroupi, proved decisive. The changes allowed Bournemouth to apply sustained pressure on Leeds’ defense, culminating in Kroupi’s crucial equalizer during stoppage time.
This result underscores Bournemouth’s resilience and tactical adaptability, as they continue to build momentum in their campaign. The draw at Elland Road not only extends their unbeaten streak but also highlights their ability to compete against physically robust teams in challenging away fixtures.
