David Moyes has called on his West Ham team to improve the standards of their set-pieces if they want to replicate last season’s form. Since Moyes return to the Hammers in December 2019 West Ham have scored more goals from set-pieces, excluding penalties, than any other Premier League side. However, Angelo Ogbonna’s winner against Everton was their first set-piece goal of the season and Moyes is demanding more from his team.
David Moyes said: “We had been working on our set-pieces and that paid off with the winning goal. We want to get back to the standards we set last year. We set really good standards last year and scored quite a few goals from set-pieces where Paul Nevin does a great job in prepping us and trying to get them right. We argue and fight over where we think the best chance of scoring is and today we got one in the end. It was a really tight game. It wasn’t an easy victory by any stretch of the imagination.”
Jarrod Bowen’s delivery was perfectly executed and Ogbonna timed his jump well to get to the ball at the near post ahead of Toffees defender Ben Godfrey. It was not the Hammers’ only chance from a dead ball with Craig Dawson twice coming close to getting on the end of wicked deliveries despite only coming into the game as a substitute in the 79th minute. Moyes was delighted with the win and the performance of his players but did call for his squad to create more clear cut chances from open play.
David Moyes added: “We’ve got the best away record in the Premier League and what we now want is the best home record in the league at London Stadium, too. We’ve got to try and make sure we get those victories at home as well. The players were great today. They played really well. Maybe just not quite as good as I’d have liked in the final third, but our football was so good for long periods. We got chances, but we couldn’t quite get those absolute clear chances. I think that’s a bit of credit to Everton as they’ve started the season really well and we have to be aware of how well they’ve done.”
