Alex Ferguson agreed with the bookmakers that Ron Atkinson, his Old Trafford predecessor, represented the greatest threat to his attempt to end Manchester United’s long wait for a league title. Ferguson described that season as “Peculiar” and suggested that Villa had in the shape of Dalian Atkinson and Dean Saunders, strikers who could create havoc if given space on the counter-attack. He also spoke about missing out on the title a season earlier and insisted “It did not break my heart” and was happy that he had signed the player that won Leeds the title a year earlier in Eric Cantona.
