Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has issued a stern warning to his teammates following their narrow victory over Leeds United. Despite closing the gap at the top of the Premier League table to four points, Foden stressed that the team’s current performance levels are insufficient to sustain a title challenge against a formidable Arsenal side.
Phil Foden said: “To be honest, we really struggled. We just have to give them the credit when it’s due. We got together with the manager at the side of the pitch and we changed a few things because we couldn’t figure out what was going on. But from that moment when we spoke to the manager, we changed the way we press and the way we played. I think we became more relaxed again. We grew into the game and then we started putting them on the back foot. Obviously, from our own performance, it wasn’t good enough from start to finish. We know that. We knew that. But today wasn’t about the way we played or how we performed. It was just for us about getting the win because we just wanted to feel how we used to feel with the three points. In the end, we managed to nick it. We have to put things right and get better and just work hard on the training pitch.”
Foden’s comments reflect a shared sentiment within the City dressing room that improvements are necessary if they are to maintain their title aspirations. The match against Leeds saw City struggle in the second half, losing composure and requiring a tactical intervention from manager Pep Guardiola to regain control. This intervention proved crucial, as it allowed the team to adjust their pressing strategy and ultimately secure the win with Foden’s injury-time goal.
The victory, while vital, highlighted the areas where City must improve. Foden’s candid assessment underscores the need for the team to work diligently on the training ground to rectify these issues. As Arsenal continues to display strong form, City cannot afford to repeat the lapses seen against Leeds if they hope to reclaim the Premier League crown.
