Enzo Maresca
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has found himself under scrutiny despite a successful debut season at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have made a strong start to the latest Premier League campaign, sitting just one point behind Sunderland, who currently hold the final Champions League spot. As the league standings begin to take shape, teams like Bournemouth, Spurs, Manchester United, Crystal Palace, Brighton, and Aston Villa are all vying for top positions. Meanwhile, Newcastle United, who finished fifth last season, are struggling in the bottom half, with their away form being a particular concern.
Jermaine Pennant said: “I would say, their [Newcastle] home form is good but I can’t see them finishing in the top four. Not the way Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City are playing, that fourth spot you’re maybe looking at Chelsea. You look at the players they’ve got, they’ve got some out with injury and they’re missing their best player in Cole Palmer, that’s only going to strengthen their progress throughout the season. We’ve seen what they can do on a good day, it’s just about consistency. I think Moises Caicedo is doing a fantastic job, he’s like the Claude Makelele of old, I just feel with their strength in depth, they’ve got enough to be in the top four.”
Jermaine Pennant added: “A little bit surprising [Enzo Maresca criticism] because since he’s took over, he’s steadied the ship, there was a lot of chaos going on but he has got rid of the deadwood and seems like he has brought the togetherness.”
Maresca’s tenure at Chelsea has seen its share of ups and downs. The team suffered early defeats against Manchester United and Brighton but managed to bounce back with a significant victory over Liverpool, thanks to Estevao’s decisive goal. However, a recent 2-2 draw against Qarabag in the Champions League has reignited pressure on the manager. Despite these challenges, Maresca’s ability to stabilize the team and foster unity has been acknowledged by some, including former Arsenal and Liverpool star Jermaine Pennant.
The criticism aimed at Maresca comes as a surprise to many, considering the improvements he has brought to the team. His efforts to clear out underperforming players and build a cohesive unit have been evident. As the season progresses, Maresca’s ability to maintain consistency and leverage the depth of his squad will be crucial in securing a top-four finish and ensuring Chelsea’s continued presence in the Champions League.
