Granit Xhaka
Granit Xhaka has been reflecting on his initial experiences with Sunderland as the team prepares for a challenging encounter against his former club, Arsenal, this weekend. Currently sitting fourth in the Premier League table, Sunderland has made an impressive return to the top flight, losing only twice since their promotion. Despite securing 18 points from their first 10 matches and establishing an 11-point cushion from the relegation zone, Xhaka believes there is still room for improvement.
Granit Xhaka said: “No one before the season thought we would be where we are, but to me it’s not surprising. If you see this team and how everyone works day by day – how demanding we are and the mentality – these are the standards every day here. How you train is how you play. That’s what I believe. We deserve to be where we are. We are still very, very far from being where we want.”
He continued: “I’m 33 now and with my experience in the UK and abroad, I have had many coaches in my career where I took a lot from them. I’m very happy to be in England and at Sunderland. I always say the connection between the players and the fans is so important. When I came here, my message was that it doesn’t matter how things are going, we always have this support. We need the supporters; they are so important.”
Xhaka added: “We know the quality that Arsenal have. It will be an emotional game for myself – I had seven amazing years there. To play against them here in Sunderland, of course, is very special. Hopefully, I can enjoy it as well and let’s see who the better team on this day is.”
Xhaka’s comments highlight the remarkable progress Sunderland has made since their return to the Premier League. His emphasis on the team’s work ethic and mentality underscores the foundation of their early success. The Swiss veteran’s experience is proving invaluable, both on and off the pitch, as he helps to foster a strong connection between the players and the passionate Sunderland fanbase.
The upcoming match against Arsenal is set to be a significant test for Sunderland, not only because of the quality of the opposition but also due to Xhaka’s personal ties to his former club. The midfielder’s seven-year stint with the Gunners adds an emotional layer to the encounter, which will be closely watched by fans and pundits alike. As Sunderland continues to build on their promising start, Xhaka’s leadership and experience will be crucial in guiding the team through the challenges ahead.
