Plans are afoot for the Premier League to revamp the way Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology is used next season, according to reports. Clubs have reportedly been asked about their thoughts on VAR while the opinion of fans will also be recognized. VAR technology has been a main talking point of the season because of a number of contentious calls.

FA said “The purpose is to identify improvements to the VAR system and form a common understanding of where a VAR interpretation is expected and how changes can be made to increase consistency in interpretation and decision-making. The results will inform the coaching and training of match officials during the close season and changes will take effect in season 2021-2022. The PGMOL will present an action plan at the next shareholders’ meeting outlining changes and improvements for next season and beyond.”

Villa have been involved in high-profile VAR calls since they were promoted back to the Premier League last season, when the technology was first brought in. Ollie Watkins ‘ late goal at West Ham United this season was ruled out by offside despite the player appearing to be fouled and captain Jack Grealish declared VAR to be ‘ruining the game’ and Dean Smith was left fuming after a goal was given for Manchester City in January.
